1932 – 1959“I was born François Truffaut on the 6th of February 1932 in Montmartre, Paris, the illegitimate son of Janine de Monferrand, raised by my maternal grandmother until I was eight. My childhood in Montmartre was unhappy and chaotic — I felt unwanted by my parents and found refuge in two things: the cinema and books. I was a truant and a delinquent by adolescence and was sent to a reformatory at fourteen. André Bazin rescued me from that institution, and under his guidance I became first a critic and then a director. The Montmartre of my childhood, with its cheap cinemas and bookshops and its sense of being slightly outside the official Paris, made me the filmmaker I became.”
