“Harry Styles was born in Redditch, Worcestershire, in February 1994, and as a small boy moved with his parents, Anne and Des, and his older sister Gemma to Holmes Chapel, a quiet village in the Cheshire countryside between Manchester and Stoke. It is a place of red-brick houses, a village green, a church, a few pubs and a railway station, and he has described it as a lovely, ordinary place to grow up. His parents divorced when he was seven, and he lived with his mother and sister, and later his stepfather, Robin, whom he adored. He was a cheerful, cheeky, popular boy at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive, where he first sang in front of people. He loved Elvis and the music his parents played, from Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones to Shania Twain. At school he formed a band called White Eskimo with three friends; he was the lead singer, and they won a local battle of the bands. On Saturdays he worked at W. Mandeville, the bakery in the village, where he served customers and swept the floor, and the bakery later became a place of pilgrimage for fans; in 2024 his Madame Tussauds waxwork was unveiled there. In 2010, at sixteen, encouraged by his mother, he auditioned for The X Factor singing Isn't She Lovely. He was put together with four other boys to form One Direction, who became one of the biggest bands in the world, and he later became a solo star. Today thousands of fans visit Holmes Chapel each year, and the village runs a walking tour of the places he knew as a boy, from the bakery to the old railway viaduct.”
