📍Hôtel du Bosc, 14 Rue Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 81000 Albi, France
1864 – 1872“I was born in 1864 in the Hôtel du Bosc, my family's town house in Albi, into an old aristocratic family where my parents were first cousins. My father, Count Alphonse, cared for hunting, horses and falconry above everything; my mother, Adèle, devoted, devout and patient, was my constant companion. Summers were spent at the family's châteaux, especially the Château du Bosc, where cousins filled the house and I sketched horses, dogs and relatives — my grandfather, father and uncle all drew well, and I began at ten. At thirteen I broke my left thigh in a fall at home in Albi, and a year later the right; a hereditary bone condition meant they never healed properly, and my legs stopped growing. Bedridden for months, I read, drew and painted constantly. Unable to ride and hunt like my father, I made art my life, and later found my home among the dancers, singers and outsiders of Montmartre. My mother gave my works to Albi, and the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec opened there in 1922.”
