📍Château de Chantilly, 60500 Chantilly, Oise, France

1844 – 1897

“I inherited Chantilly and found it in ruins — the palace had been destroyed in the Revolution. I spent forty years and a significant portion of my fortune rebuilding the Grand Château and filling it with the finest art collection in France outside the Louvre. Raphael's Three Graces, the Très Riches Heures, paintings by Poussin, Ingres, Clouet. When I bequeathed the entire estate to the Institut de France in 1886, I gave my country a gift it has not yet fully thanked me for.”

👍 LovedThe library — 17,000 volumes and 2,500 illuminated manuscripts, the finest private library in 19th-century France
👎 DislikedThe years of exile — banned from France from 1830 to 1871, I could only plan Chantilly's restoration from abroad
