1990 – 2008

“Andrew Hozier-Byrne, known as Hozier, was born in March 1990 in Bray, County Wicklow, a seaside town south of Dublin, and grew up in the Wicklow countryside, among the green hills, glens and coast of the Garden of Ireland. His father, John, was a blues drummer who played in Dublin's clubs, and his mother, Raine, is an artist, who later designed the cover of his first album. He was raised in the Quaker tradition, and his home was full of books, art and music, especially the blues and soul records his father loved. As a boy he listened to Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Nina Simone, and later Tom Waits and Van Morrison, and he started writing songs at fifteen. He went to St Gerard's School in Bray, where he sang in choirs and found his deep, soulful voice. He has spoken about the influence of Irish history, literature and landscape on his writing, and of the long walks in Wicklow's woods and mountains that fed his imagination. In 2009 he began studying music at Trinity College Dublin, but he left in his first year to record demos, and he sang with the Irish choral group Anúna. In 2013 he recorded Take Me to Church in his parents' attic, and its video went viral, making him an international star. He still lives in Wicklow, and his songs, rich with Irish folk, soul, gospel and blues, carry the landscape and the music of the home he grew up in.”
