📍Chiswick, London W4, UK
1960 – 1978“Hugh Grant was born in 1960 and grew up in Chiswick, west London, where the family lived in a flat beside Arlington Park Mansions on Sutton Lane. His father, James Grant, was a former army officer who ran a carpet business and was a talented watercolour painter and keen golfer; his mother, Fynvola, taught French, Latin and music in local schools. It was a home of good manners, wit and education rather than wealth, and Hugh and his older brother, Jamie, were encouraged to work hard and do well. He began at Hogarth Primary School in Chiswick, then went to St Peter's in Hammersmith and Wetherby School in Notting Hill. From 1969 to 1978 he attended Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith on a scholarship, where he played rugby for the first XV, as well as cricket and football. His mother's teaching and his father's paintings gave him a feel for language and observation, and his school years gave him the polished, self-deprecating charm that later became his trademark. In 1979 he won a scholarship to New College, Oxford, to read English literature, and while there he was cast in the film Privileged. He began acting and writing comedy sketches, then found fame with Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and Love Actually, playing very English men who are clever, awkward and good-hearted. He has since enjoyed a second career in darker, more surprising roles. His wry humour and love of words both trace back to the Chiswick home where his mother taught Latin and his father painted watercolours.”
