1979 – 1987“Jennifer Aniston was born in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, in February 1969, the daughter of two actors: her father, John Aniston, a Greek-born actor later famous for the soap opera Days of Our Lives, and her mother, Nancy Dow. As a small child she lived for a year in Greece and then in Pennsylvania before the family settled in New York City. Her parents separated when she was nine, and she stayed in Manhattan with her mother, growing up on the Upper West Side, a lively neighbourhood of brownstones, bookshops and delis near Central Park and Riverside Drive. At six she started at the Rudolf Steiner School, a Waldorf school where art and creativity were at the heart of learning; she painted, and one of her paintings was later shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of an exhibition of children's art. Her parents discouraged television, but she found ways to watch it anyway. At eleven she joined the school's drama club and discovered acting, inspired after seeing a Broadway production. The divorce was hard, and she has spoken about a difficult relationship with her mother in those years. As a teenager she won a place at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, the Fame school, where she trained as an actor, graduating in 1987. After working as a waitress and in off-Broadway plays, she moved to Los Angeles, and in 1994 she was cast as Rachel Green in Friends, which made her one of the most famous actresses in the world. New York, where she grew up and learned her craft, is where Friends was set.”
