📍23 Brook Street, Mayfair, London, UK
1968 – 1969“I lived at 23 Brook Street in Mayfair for a year between 1968 and 1969, in a flat above the one where George Frideric Handel had lived two hundred years before. I didn't know about Handel when I moved in — I found out later, and the idea delighted me. The flat was tiny and chaotic and I filled it with scarves and velvet and burning incense and the equipment for recording ideas at all hours. London in those years was the most alive place I had ever been — the fashion, the art, the sense that everything was possible and nothing was fixed. I recorded Electric Ladyland while I was based in London, and the city was in every note of it: the wildness and the beauty and the strangeness of being a Black American man who had found more freedom in England than he had ever known at home.”
