1833 – 1853“I was born on the 7th of May 1833 in Hamburg, the son of a double-bass player in the Hamburg city theatre. The Hamburg of my childhood was a port city of commercial energy and musical seriousness — the city had a strong choral tradition and a public that took concert music seriously. My father gave me my first musical education and arranged my lessons with Eduard Marxsen, one of the finest music teachers in Germany. Hamburg formed me in ways I only recognised from a distance: the North German Protestant directness, the seriousness about craft, the suspicion of display that became the aesthetic of my music. I spent most of my adult life in Vienna, but Hamburg was always the tuning fork against which I measured everything.”
