📍Oude Langendijk, Delft, Netherlands
“I spent nearly all of my forty-three years within these streets of Delft, and I would not have had it otherwise. My home and studio on the Oude Langendijk was my entire world — the north-facing windows cast a light I have never seen equalled, falling cool and even across whatever I placed before them. I had eleven children and considerable debt, and I painted perhaps two or three pictures a year when the light and the subject and the stillness all aligned at once. People now ask how I achieved what I achieved. The answer is simple: I paid attention. And this city, in this light, rewarded attention enormously.”
