📍Jodenbreestraat 4, 1011 NK Amsterdam, Netherlands
1639 – 1669“I bought the house on the Sint Anthonisbreestraat — now the Jodenbreestraat — in Amsterdam's Jewish quarter in 1639, at the height of my success. It was a large house and I filled it with art: paintings, prints, busts, weapons, exotic fabrics — everything that might serve as a prop or source of visual inspiration. I went bankrupt in 1656 and the house and its contents were sold to pay creditors. I moved to a smaller house on the Rozengracht and continued working. The Night Watch was painted in the Jodenbreestraat years. The bankruptcy paintings are the greater achievement.”
