📍Church Street, East Bergholt, Suffolk CO7 6TJ, England
1776 – 1837“I was born John Constable on the 11th of June 1776 in East Bergholt, a village in the Stour Valley in Suffolk, the son of a prosperous miller. The Stour Valley — the flat water meadows, the willows, the working mills, the enormous East Anglian sky — was my subject for life. I left East Bergholt for London and the Royal Academy, but the valley stayed in my imagination as the standard against which I measured every landscape. The Hay Wain, The Leaping Horse, Dedham Vale — these are the Stour Valley seen with the eyes of a man who loved it completely.”
