📍2 Rue Charles Dubois, 80000 Amiens, France
1882 – 1900“I grew up in Nantes, in a tall house on the quay of the Île Feydeau, then a true island between two arms of the Loire. From my window I watched the tall ships load and unload cargoes from far-off lands, and the shipyard men at work, and I dreamed of sailing away; family legend says I once tried to run off as a cabin boy. My father wanted me to follow him into the law. Instead I wrote Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days. My wife Honorine came from Amiens, and in 1882 we moved into this brick mansion with its corner tower on Rue Charles-Dubois. For eighteen years it was home: a winter garden full of plants, a library, and high in the tower a small study like a ship's cabin, where I rose at dawn and wrote before breakfast. I became a town councillor, helped build the city's circus, and never went to sea again — except in my books. The house is now the Maison de Jules Verne, with over seven hundred objects from my life.”
