1975 – 1991“Kate Winslet was born in Reading, Berkshire, in October 1975, into a family of actors. Her father, Roger, was a struggling actor who took labouring jobs to support the family, and her mother, Sally, worked as a nanny and a waitress. Her maternal grandparents, Oliver and Linda, ran the Reading Repertory Theatre, and acting was in the family's blood: her sisters, Anna and Beth, also became actresses. Money was often tight, and the family lived modestly, sometimes relying on help from a charity for acting families. She grew up in a close, noisy, loving household in Reading, and at five she played Mary in a school nativity play. At eleven she began studying at Redroofs Theatre School in Maidenhead, which also worked as an agency, taking students to auditions in London. She was teased as a child for her weight, and some classmates called her Blubber, but she was determined, and she became head girl. At thirteen she appeared in a television commercial for Sugar Puffs, dancing with the Honey Monster, and she worked in children's television and theatre. At seventeen she won the lead role in Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures, and soon afterwards Sense and Sensibility and Titanic made her one of the most famous actresses in the world. She won an Oscar for The Reader. She has often spoken about her down-to-earth Reading childhood, and about standing up to the teasing, and she supports young people with body image struggles.”
