📍Buckingham Palace, London SW1A 1AA, UK
1948 – 1970“Charles was born at Buckingham Palace in November 1948, and after a few years at Clarence House he grew up in its nursery wing once his mother became queen. With his parents often away on royal tours, his world was the nursery and his Scottish governess, Catherine Peebles, who began his lessons at five and described him as sensitive, shy and fond of quiet pursuits like reading and painting. In 1955 the Palace announced that he would go to school rather than be taught privately — the first heir to the throne educated that way — first at Hill House in west London, then as a boarder at Cheam and at his father's old school, Gordonstoun, on the bleak Moray coast, which he is said to have nicknamed Colditz in kilts but later credited with teaching him about himself. Summers at Balmoral and Sandringham gave him a lasting love of the countryside, gardening and the natural world, which flowered decades later in his organic garden at Highgrove and his lifelong environmental campaigning.”
