📍Neuschwansteinstraße 20, 87645 Schwangau, Bavaria, Germany
1886“I built Neuschwanstein to escape. The Bavarian government wanted a constitutional puppet; I wanted to live inside the world of Lohengrin and Parsifal that Wagner had given me. Every room was a stage set: the Singers' Hall built for a performance never given, the grotto modelled on Tannhäuser, the Byzantine throne room from a fairy tale. I occupied it for only 172 days before they declared me mad and took me away. I never returned.”
