“Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born in New York City in March 1986 and grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, in an Italian-American Catholic family, with her parents, Cynthia and Joseph Germanotta, an internet entrepreneur, and her younger sister, Natali. At four she began piano lessons, learning to play by ear, and she was writing songs and performing at open mic nights by her early teens. From eleven she attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, a girls' Catholic school on the Upper East Side, where she acted in school productions. At seventeen she won early admission to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, but she left to pursue music, playing clubs on the Lower East Side. Her debut album, The Fame, in 2008, made her a global star, and she has also won an Academy Award for songwriting.”
