📍Whitburn, West Lothian, UK
2000 – 2017“Lewis Capaldi was born in Glasgow in October 1996, and when he was four his family moved to East Whitburn, a small former mining village near Bathgate in West Lothian, between Glasgow and Edinburgh. He grew up in a semi-detached family home there with his parents and older siblings, in a close, chatty family; the actor Peter Capaldi is a distant relative, and his older brother, Warren, was also a musician. He fell in love with music early, idolising his fellow Scot Paolo Nutini, and began playing guitar and drums at about nine. By twelve he was performing in pubs around Bathgate and West Lothian, with his parents driving him to gigs, and he started writing songs in his early teens. His bedroom at the family home became his recording studio: he would sit on his bed with his guitar and a microphone, recording songs on his phone and posting them online. His self-deprecating humour, which later made him famous on social media, was honed growing up in a family that teased each other constantly. In 2015 a music manager came across one of the songs he had recorded in his bedroom and flew to Scotland to meet him. Within two years his debut single, Bruised, had become a streaming hit, and in 2019 Someone You Loved went to number one in the UK and the US. He has spoken openly about his anxiety and his Tourette's diagnosis, and he remains fiercely proud of West Lothian and the bedroom where it all began.”
