2005 – 2007“I was born in 1935 on the edge of Modena, and the four of us — my father, mother, sister and I — were crowded into a two-room flat in a working-class block. My father, Fernando, was a baker with a beautiful tenor voice who was too nervous ever to sing professionally, and he played his records of Caruso, Gigli and Schipa until I knew every phrase. My mother, Adele, worked in the cigar factory. I was a happy, noisy boy who wanted to be a football goalkeeper, and I trained as a primary-school teacher before music took over. In 1955 I sang in the Corale Rossini, Modena's male-voice choir, beside my father, and we won first prize at the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales — the moment I knew I had to try. After singing in every great opera house in the world, I came home: I built this house on Stradello Nava in the countryside outside Modena, among the fields and farms where I had grown up, near my horses and my family. Modena's food, its people and its dialect were home to me always. The house is now the Casa Museo Luciano Pavarotti.”
