📍Leberstraße 65, 10829 Berlin, Germany
1901 – 1930“I was born Marie Magdalene Dietrich on the 27th of December 1901 in Schöneberg, a comfortable middle-class district of Berlin. My father died when I was six and my mother Josephine maintained the household's bourgeois respectability through stringent economy and force of will. Schöneberg gave me the German thoroughness and capacity for self-discipline that I applied to everything — I practised the violin for hours every day, worked obsessively at my singing and my appearance. The Berlin of my young adulthood in the 1920s was the most electrifying city in the world — the cabaret culture, the sexual freedom, the sense that all conventions were up for renegotiation. I absorbed all of it and took it to Hollywood.”
