1483 – 1546

“I was born Martin Luther on the 10th of November 1483 in Eisleben, Saxony, the son of Hans Luther, a copper miner who had risen to become a mine owner. My father intended me for a legal career. I was caught in a thunderstorm in 1505 and cried out that if I survived I would become a monk. I survived and kept my vow. I became an Augustinian friar, was ordained, and in 1517 nailed the Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, disputing the sale of indulgences. I did not intend to split the Western church — I intended to reform it. The split happened anyway. I was born in Eisleben and I died there in 1546. The city bracketed a life that changed the world.”

👍 LovedThe mining community's directness and practical faith. The Augustinian monastery's serious theological education. The German language that I shaped through my Bible translation.
👎 DislikedThe thunderstorm vow and its consequences. The excommunication and the years of hiding at Wartburg. The violence of the Peasants' War that my theology had partly inspired.
