📍Welwyn Garden City AL8, UK
1957 – 1976“Nick Faldo was born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, in July 1957, the only child of George, an accountant at Imperial Chemical Industries, and Joyce, a cutter and pattern-maker. Welwyn Garden City was one of England's planned garden cities, built in the 1920s with wide green verges, tree-lined avenues and neat houses, and Nick grew up there in a comfortable, ordered home. He was a sporty, determined boy who loved swimming and cycling. At ten he won a Hertfordshire county medal in the 100 metres breaststroke, and he rode his bike for miles through the countryside. He also played football, rugby, basketball, cricket and tennis, and threw the discus at Sir Frederic Osborn School in the town. Then, at fourteen, he watched Jack Nicklaus play in the 1971 Masters on his parents' new colour television, and he was transfixed, though he had never held a golf club. His mother arranged six lessons, he borrowed a set of clubs from a neighbour, and he was hooked. Within a few years, practising obsessively, he was one of the best amateurs in Britain, winning the English Amateur at eighteen in 1975, and he turned professional in 1976. In the mid-1980s he rebuilt his swing with David Leadbetter, and he went on to win six major championships, including three Open Championships and three Masters, becoming Britain's most successful golfer. He was knighted in 2009.”
