1886 – 1890“I spent several transformative years in Pont-Aven during the late 1880s, drawn by the light, the landscape, and the cost of living — Paris had become impossible on what little I had. The village square near the harbour was where I would meet Émile Bernard and the others, arguing late into the evening about colour and form and what painting could become. My studio was a short walk from the river; I could hear the mills turning. It was here that I began to break free from the Impressionists, to use colour not as I saw it but as I felt it. The Breton women in their white coifs, the granite chapels, the green fields rolling to the sea — I painted them with a boldness that shocked many. I was not always welcome. The locals found me strange, and perhaps I was. But Pont-Aven gave me something Paris never could: space to think, and the courage to become myself.”
