📍Kensington Palace, Kensington Gardens, London W8 4PX, UK
1982 – 1997“William spent his childhood in Apartments 8 and 9 at Kensington Palace, the joined flats his parents moved into after their wedding, where his mother turned the whole top floor into a nursery for him and his younger brother Harry. Diana was determined her boys would know ordinary life: she walked them to Wetherby School in Notting Hill, took them to McDonald's and to Thorpe Park, where they queued for the log flume like everyone else, and travelled with them on public transport. She also took them to places most princes never saw — at about eleven William went with her to The Passage, a homelessness shelter near Victoria, a visit he has said gave him a different perspective on the world and inspired his own work on homelessness. He was fifteen and at Balmoral when his mother died in 1997, and the sea of flowers left at the palace gates remains one of the defining images of the decade. Years later he returned to Kensington Palace as a husband and father, raising his own children there.”
