📍Apartment 1A, Kensington Palace, London W8 4PX, UK
1963 – 2002“I grew up at 145 Piccadilly and Royal Lodge, the adored younger sister who could make Papa laugh, and later shared those wartime Christmases at Windsor with Lilibet, starring in our pantomimes. When she became queen, my life was shaped by being second, and I was not permitted to marry the man I loved. In 1960 I married Tony Armstrong-Jones, the photographer, and in 1963 we moved into Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace, a sprawling home of some twenty rooms across several floors. We made it modern and glamorous — bold colours, pink and kingfisher blue, a darkroom for Tony's photography, nurseries for our children, rooms filled with family silver and paintings. I filled it with friends: actors, writers, musicians, dancers, people who made me laugh late into the night. After Tony and I parted, Apartment 1A remained my London home for almost forty years, while the house I built on Mustique was my escape in the sun. My walled garden here was my greatest pleasure.”
