1483 – 1495

“I was born Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino on the 6th of April 1483 in Urbino, the capital of a small duchy in central Italy ruled by the Montefeltro family — one of the most cultivated courts in Renaissance Italy. My father Giovanni was a painter at the Urbino court and my first teacher. My mother died when I was eight and my father when I was eleven. I was apprenticed to Perugino and reached Rome at twenty-five, when Pope Julius II commissioned the Stanza della Segnatura. I spent the remaining twelve years of my life in Rome painting and designing. I died on my thirty-seventh birthday.”

👍 LovedThe Urbino ducal court's aesthetic standards — the most complete integration of the arts in Renaissance Italy. My father's teaching and early access to great painting. The Rome of Julius II and Leo X.
👎 DislikedThe early deaths of my parents that left me dependent on patrons from childhood. The impossible workload of my Roman years. The thirty-seven years that were not enough.
