📍Bayonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques 64100, France
1887 – 1976“I was born René Samuel Cassin in Bayonne in the French Basque Country in 1887, the son of a Jewish merchant family. Bayonne's position at the confluence of French, Basque and Spanish cultures gave me an early sense of cultural complexity. I studied law in Paris and was badly wounded in the First World War — a wound that left me partially disabled for life. I joined de Gaulle in London in 1940 and spent the war years working on French legal affairs in exile. After the war I became the principal drafter of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 1948. The Bayonne childhood, the law studies, the wound, the exile — these were the biography from which the Universal Declaration emerged: a man who had experienced both what law could protect and what its absence permitted.”
