📍Middleham Castle, Castle Hill, Middleham, Leyburn DL8 4QG, UK
1465 – 1483“My father was killed at Wakefield when I was eight, and my brother Edward became king. In 1465, at about thirteen, I was sent to Middleham, the great castle of our cousin Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, high in Wensleydale, to be trained as a knight among the sons of noble families. Here I learned to ride, joust and fight, despite the curve in my spine, and to read, govern and keep a great household. I came to love the North and its people. After Warwick turned against my brother and fell, I married his daughter Anne, whom I had known since we were children at Middleham, and the castle became our own home. Our only son, Edward, was born here. In the North I was trusted and loved; they called me good lord. I became king in 1483 and reigned for two years before I fell at Bosworth, the last English king to die in battle. My bones were found beneath a car park in Leicester in 2012. Middleham's ruins, now cared for by English Heritage, still stand above the town.”
