📍Richard-Wagner-Straße 48, 95444 Bayreuth, Bavaria, Germany
1874 – 1883“I built Wahnfried — Freed from Illusion and Strife — in Bayreuth in 1874, and it was my home for the last nine years of my life. I had chosen Bayreuth because King Ludwig II of Bavaria had funded a festival theatre there where my operas could be performed as I intended, with the orchestra hidden in a pit and the audience in darkness — conditions that did not exist anywhere else. The house was built to my specifications: a large comfortable villa with a garden where I worked and received visitors. Wagner societies from across Europe sent money; Ludwig sent money; Nietzsche visited and then broke with me. I died in Venice in 1883 but I am buried in the garden at Wahnfried. The festival theatre is still there. The Ring Cycle still plays every summer.”
