1984 – 2002“Scarlett Johansson was born in New York City in November 1984 and grew up in Greenwich Village, the historic Manhattan neighbourhood of brownstones, cafés, Washington Square Park and Off-Broadway theatres. Her mother, Melanie Sloan, is a producer, and her father, Karsten, is a Danish-born architect. She has a twin brother, Hunter, an older sister, Vanessa, and an older brother, Adrian, and she was very close to her maternal grandmother, Dorothy, a bookkeeper and teacher, whom she considered her best friend. She went to PS 41, the local public elementary school, and from a young age wanted to perform, singing and dancing for her family. Her mother took her to auditions, and she studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute's programme for young actors. She soon lost interest in commercials and set her sights on film and theatre. At eight she made her stage debut Off-Broadway in the play Sophistry, alongside Ethan Hawke, and at nine she appeared in her first film, North. Her parents divorced when she was thirteen. She went on to the Professional Children's School in Manhattan, graduating in 2002, and while still a teenager earned acclaim in Ghost World and Lost in Translation. She became one of the world's highest-paid actresses, with roles in the Marvel films as Black Widow, and in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. She has always called New York home.”
