1965 – 1970“Saul Hudson was born in Hampstead, London, in July 1965, the son of Anthony Hudson, an English artist who designed album covers, and Ola Hudson, an African American costume designer whose clients included David Bowie. For his first years he lived with his father's family in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, one of the six towns of the Potteries, an industrial area of brick terraces, bottle kilns and pottery works, where he was raised partly by his grandparents while his mother worked in Los Angeles. He was a creative, artistic child who loved drawing, and music was everywhere in the family. When he was about six, he moved with his father to Los Angeles to join his mother, and he grew up surrounded by the city's music and art world, meeting musicians and artists through his parents' work. In Los Angeles, as a teenager, he was a keen BMX rider and won competitions, and he was a bit of a loner and a troublemaker. At fifteen, after hearing Aerosmith's Rocks, he picked up a one-string guitar his grandmother gave him and took lessons at the Fairfax Music School, practising for up to twelve hours a day. A friend's father nicknamed him Slash because he was always rushing from one thing to another. In 1985 he joined Guns N' Roses, and his top hat, cigarette and soaring solos on Sweet Child o' Mine, November Rain and Paradise City made him one of the most famous guitarists in the world. He later formed Velvet Revolver and Slash's Snakepit. He has always been proud of his English roots in Stoke-on-Trent, where he spent his earliest years.”
