1995 – 2013“Timothée Chalamet was born in New York City in December 1995 and grew up in Manhattan Plaza, a subsidised apartment complex on 43rd Street in Hell's Kitchen, built for people working in the performing arts. His mother, Nicole Flender, was a former Broadway dancer and teacher who later became an estate agent, and his father, Marc, is from Nîmes in France and worked as an editor for UNICEF. He grew up with his older sister, Pauline, in a bilingual home full of books, films and dance, surrounded by actors, musicians and dancers in the building. Every summer the family went to his grandparents' house in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, a small village in the hills of south-central France, where he spent long days outdoors, played football and spoke French. He has said that moving between Hell's Kitchen and rural France gave him a sense of being between two worlds. In New York he went to PS 87 and then a demanding middle school, which he found miserable without a creative outlet. Seeing Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight inspired him to act. He auditioned for the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, the Fame school, and was accepted, graduating in 2013. He began acting professionally as a teenager, and in 2017 his performance in Call Me by Your Name earned him an Oscar nomination. He has since starred in Dune, Wonka and A Complete Unknown. He has often spoken with affection about Manhattan Plaza and the creative community that raised him.”
