Residence 1

📍Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire OX20 1PP, United Kingdom

1874 – 1892

“I was born prematurely at Blenheim on the thirtieth of November 1874, in a ground-floor room during a party — which is precisely the kind of entrance my father would have approved of. Blenheim is the most magnificent house in England, built for my ancestor John Churchill as a gift from a grateful nation. That I was born here rather than in some modest townhouse gave me, I think, an early understanding of what England had achieved, and what it stood to lose.”

👍 LovedThe Long Library, the great baroque halls — they taught me that civilisation requires effort to maintain
👎 DislikedThe atmosphere of declining family finances that hung over my childhood visits like an unspoken reproach

Residence 2

📍Mapleton Road, Westerham, Kent TN16 1PS, United Kingdom

1922 – 1965

“I bought Chartwell in 1922 without telling Clementine first, which she never entirely forgave me for. But I loved the place from the first moment — the escarpment view across the Weald of Kent, the pond, the wall I built myself with my own hands during the Wilderness Years when the Tories wouldn't have me. At Chartwell I wrote the History of the Second World War. The bricklaying was a way of thinking — there is something clarifying about putting one brick precisely upon another.”

👍 LovedMy painting studio in the garden — painting saved my sanity during the years of political exclusion in the 1930s
👎 DislikedThe expense of upkeep, which drove us to consider selling several times before the National Trust eventually took it

Residence 3

📍10 Downing Street, Westminster, London, United Kingdom

1940 – 1955

“I served as Prime Minister at Number Ten twice — first from 1940, when the war demanded it, and again from 1951. During the war years I spent as much time as possible in the Cabinet War Rooms beneath the Treasury — the bombing made central London dangerous and most of the real work happened there. But Number Ten was the address that mattered, the address that told the world that Britain still had a government and still intended to fight. I held my first Cabinet meeting here days after becoming Prime Minister in May 1940, with France collapsing across the Channel and invasion a genuine possibility. The building is deceptive — it looks modest from the street, but inside it is a proper working house, large and full of history. I felt that history in the walls and used it. Britain needed confidence, and Downing Street, when it was functioning, radiated it.”

👍 LovedThe weight of the address itself — the sense that standing at this door you were standing at the centre of something that had mattered for centuries, and that your job was to prove it still did.
👎 DislikedThe distance from the front lines, and the frustration of war leadership — making decisions whose consequences you would learn about only hours or days later.
