1928 – 1979

“I was born Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on the 5th of January 1928 in Larkana, Sindh, the son of a feudal landowner. I was educated at Berkeley and Oxford, became a lawyer and politician, served as Foreign Minister, and founded the Pakistan People's Party in 1967. I became President and then Prime Minister of Pakistan. I was overthrown in a military coup by General Zia ul-Haq in 1977, tried for conspiracy to murder, and hanged on the 4th of April 1979. My daughter Benazir continued my political legacy and was herself assassinated in 2007. Larkana and the Sindhi feudal culture gave me the charisma and the arrogance that made me the most compelling Pakistani politician of my era and contributed to my destruction.”

👍 LovedThe Pakistan People's Party and the mass political movement it created. The 1972 Simla Agreement with India after the Bangladesh war. The Larkana feudal culture and its confidence.
👎 DislikedThe rigging of the 1977 election that gave Zia his pretext. The hanging that was a judicial murder. The authoritarian tendencies that contradicted the democratic rhetoric.
