1928 – 1949“I was born Andrew Warhola on the 6th of August 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Ruthenian immigrants. The Pittsburgh of my childhood was a steel city — dark with smoke, industrial, ethnically divided. I was a sickly child who spent time in bed drawing and cutting out pictures from magazines. My mother Julia was an embroiderer and folk artist who moved to New York to live with me in 1952 and stayed for twenty years. Pittsburgh gave me the working-class immigrant background that I spent my adult life simultaneously escaping and memorialising. The Campbell's Soup Cans were about the repetition of ordinary commercial life — the life I had grown up in.”
