1844 – 1926“I was born Mary Stevenson Cassatt on the 22nd of May 1844 in Allegheny City, now part of Pittsburgh, into a prosperous family that travelled extensively in Europe during my childhood. I studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, went to Europe to study seriously, settled in Paris, and became the only American invited to exhibit with the French Impressionists. Degas became my closest colleague. I painted women and children — not as sentimental subjects but as the full reality of domestic life, seen from the inside by someone who lived that life.”
