📍1300 Beechwood Boulevard, Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, PA 15217, USA
1968 – 2003“I grew up in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, but it was the Squirrel Hill neighbourhood of Pittsburgh where I made my adult home and my life's work. I moved there to be near WQED, the public television station where I made Mister Rogers' Neighborhood for thirty-three years, and the neighbourhood suited me — a quiet, walkable, diverse community where I could walk to the synagogues and churches and shops and feel the texture of ordinary human life that I tried to reflect in my work. I believed with complete conviction that each child who watched my programme was special exactly as they were, and I tried to create a television neighbourhood that felt as safe and consistent and loving as the best human neighbourhoods can be. Every morning I swam laps in the YMCA pool, every evening I played the piano, and every day I tried to do the work of telling children that they were loved.”
