1992 – 2010

“I was born Malcolm James McCormick in January 1992 and grew up in Point Breeze, a leafy, comfortable neighbourhood in the East End of Pittsburgh, beside Frick Park. My mother, Karen Meyers, was a photographer, and my father, Mark McCormick, was an architect; my mother was Jewish and my father Christian, and my older brother and I were raised Jewish, though I went to a Catholic grade school. I spent my childhood playing in Frick Park, especially at the Blue Slide Park, a playground with a long blue slide where all the neighbourhood kids went. I was always making music. I taught myself to play piano, guitar, drums and bass by about the age of six, and I wanted to be a singer before I started rapping at about fourteen. I went to Winchester Thurston School and then Taylor Allderdice High School, and at fifteen I decided to get serious, giving up sports and parties to make music. I called myself EZ Mac and released my first mixtape at fifteen, and I hung out at the Frick Park Market, the corner shop near my house, buying sandwiches. I recorded at a local studio, ID Labs, with my friends, making mixtapes that spread around Pittsburgh's schools. I signed with Rostrum Records, a Pittsburgh label, and my mixtape KIDS and my song Frick Park Market brought me attention. My first album, Blue Slide Park, named after the playground I loved, went to number one in 2011, the first independent debut to do so in years. I kept growing as a musician, making Swimming and Circles. Pittsburgh remembers me at Blue Slide Park, where fans gather in my memory.”
