📍Bro, Upplands-Bro, Sweden
1970 – 1990“Annika Sörenstam was born in Bro, a small town in the countryside north-west of Stockholm, in October 1970, the elder of two daughters of Tom, an IBM executive, and Gunilla, who worked in a bank. Her parents were keen golfers, and from the age of five she went along on their rounds at the Bro-Bålsta Golf Club, which opened near their home in 1980. But her first love was tennis: her hero was Björn Borg, and she trained for seven years, becoming one of the top junior players in the Stockholm area. She was an all-round athlete who also played football and skied, and at twelve she and her younger sister, Charlotta, shared their first set of golf clubs, Annika taking the odd numbers and Charlotta the even. She liked that in golf there were no mind games with opponents; it was just her and her swing. At fourteen she began lessons with the coach Henri Reis. She was so shy that she sometimes missed putts on purpose in the final round to avoid having to make a winner's speech, until her parents and coaches insisted she speak whatever the result. At sixteen she gave up tennis for golf, and she joined the Swedish national team. She went to the University of Arizona, where she won the NCAA championship in 1991, and turned professional in 1992. She went on to win ten major championships and 72 LPGA titles, and in 2001 she shot 59, the first woman to break 60 in competition. Charlotta also became an LPGA champion.”
