1927 – 1986“I was born Sven Olof Joachim Palme on the 30th of January 1927 in Stockholm, into an upper-class Swedish family, and I became the most internationally engaged Social Democratic Prime Minister Sweden has ever had. I opposed the Vietnam War from the podium of the United Nations, marched alongside the North Vietnamese ambassador in Stockholm, and made Sweden's foreign policy a statement of moral principle rather than national interest. I was shot dead on the street in Stockholm on the 28th of February 1986 as I walked home from the cinema with my wife, without a bodyguard, as Swedish prime ministers did in those days. The murder was never conclusively solved. Stockholm — its streets, its ordinariness, the freedom of a city where a prime minister could walk unguarded — was everything I believed Sweden should be.”
