1915 – 1939“I was born Ingrid Bergman on the 29th of August 1915 in Stockholm, the only child of Justus Bergman, a shopkeeper and amateur photographer, and Frieda Adler, who died when I was two. My father died when I was twelve and I was raised by relatives. The Swedish childhood — its light, its seriousness, its Protestant restraint — shaped a quality in my acting that Hollywood found immediately compelling: a naturalness that appeared artless but was the product of a particular Scandinavian directness. I came to Hollywood in 1939 and became one of the most famous women in the world. The Djurgården neighbourhood of my Stockholm childhood was where my father took me to photograph, and where I first understood that beauty was worth attending to.”
