1906 – 1925“I was born in Reus, near Tarragona, the son of a coppersmith, and as a child rheumatism often kept me from playing with other boys, so I spent long hours watching nature — plants, insects, the shapes of rocks and trees in the Camp de Tarragona. Nature was my first teacher, and my coppersmith father's craft taught me to think in space and curves. In 1906 I moved into a pink house in Park Güell, the garden city on the hill above Barcelona that Eusebi Güell had commissioned from me. The house was built as a show home for the development by my friend and right-hand man Francesc Berenguer, and I lived there with my elderly father and my young niece. When they both died, I stayed on alone, with Carmelite nuns helping with the household, and my rooms grew ever plainer. From 1914 I worked on nothing but the Sagrada Família, and in my last months I moved into my workshop at the church to be closer to it. The house opened as the Gaudí House Museum in 1963.”
