📍Calle de Zuloaga 3, 50142 Fuendetodos, Zaragoza, Spain
1746 – 1828“I was born Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes on the 30th of March 1746 in Fuendetodos, a small village in Aragon. I went to Zaragoza to study and then to Madrid, and by my late thirties I was First Court Painter to the Spanish Crown. The Enlightenment optimism of those court years gave way after 1792 to something darker. I became deaf after a severe illness and the darkness entered everything. The Disasters of War, the Black Paintings — these came from the deaf man in the Quinta del Sordo, the House of the Deaf Man, watching Spain tear itself apart.”
