1981 – 1999“Iker Casillas was born in May 1981 in Móstoles, a fast-growing working-class town of apartment blocks on the southern edge of Madrid. His parents, José Luis and María del Carmen, both came from Navalacruz, a small village in the mountains of Ávila, where Iker spent summers, and he has a younger brother, Unai. He has described a modest, austere childhood in a small flat, playing on the streets of Móstoles with scraped knees. The family lived for a time in the Basque Country, but Iker always considered Madrid his home. He was mad about football and loved playing in goal, diving around wherever he could. There is a famous family story that, as a small boy, he forgot to post his father's football pools coupon on the weekend his father had correctly predicted every result, costing the family a fortune. At nine he went for a trial at Real Madrid, and he was selected from hundreds of children to join the club's youth teams. He came through all of Real Madrid's youth sides and made his first-team debut at eighteen, in 1999. He became one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, known as San Iker for his saves, winning five league titles and three Champions Leagues with Real Madrid, and captaining Spain to the European Championship in 2008 and 2012 and the World Cup in 2010. He remains close to Móstoles and to Navalacruz, the mountain village of his parents.”
