1806 – 1872

“I was born Pablo Benito Juárez García on the 21st of March 1806 in San Pablo Guelatao, Oaxaca, a Zapotec Indian village in the mountains. I was orphaned at three and raised by my uncle. I learned Spanish at twelve — it was not my first language. I studied law, became governor of Oaxaca, and eventually President of Mexico — the first indigenous person to lead any country in the Western Hemisphere. I defeated the French intervention, had Emperor Maximilian executed, and restored the Mexican Republic in 1867. My Laws of Reform separated church and state and established the constitutional foundations of modern Mexico. Oaxaca was always home — the mountains, the Zapotec culture, the memory of who I had been before the law and politics.”

👍 LovedThe Oaxaca mountains and the Zapotec culture that formed me. The law as the tool of justice for those the system was designed to exclude. The restored Republic.
👎 DislikedThe French intervention and the years of fighting to recover Mexico's sovereignty. The executions that accompanied the restoration. The poverty of the indigenous childhood that the presidency did not erase from memory.
