1907 – 1954

“I was born in La Casa Azul and I will die here — this was both prophecy and fact. My father was a photographer and taught me to see. At eighteen a bus accident shattered my spine and my pelvis. I lay in bed for months painting self-portraits because the face looking back at me was the only subject I could study. Pain was my material. Mexico was my soil. Diego Rivera was my great torment and my great love. The blue walls held all of it.”

👍 LovedMy collection of pre-Columbian artefacts — the ancient Mexico that lived beneath the modern one I painted
👎 DislikedThe thirty-five operations, the corsets, the pain that never entirely left from the age of eighteen
