1981 – 2000“Lorena Ochoa was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in November 1981 and grew up in a family home that overlooked the swimming pool and grounds of the Guadalajara Country Club, a leafy, green oasis in Mexico's second city. Her father, Javier, was a real estate developer, and her mother, Marcela, an artist, and she was one of five children in a close, sporty, Catholic family. The country club was her childhood playground. She was a shy but fearless and athletic child who climbed the magnolia and ceiba trees around the course, swam, played tennis and held putting contests for a peso until it was too dark to see the hole. She began playing golf at about five, and she was soon winning junior tournaments in Mexico and the Junior World Championships in San Diego several times. She also loved the outdoors and adventure, climbing mountains and volcanoes with her family. Her coach, Rafael Alarcón, helped her develop her powerful, graceful swing. She won a golf scholarship to the University of Arizona, where she was twice national college player of the year, and turned professional in 2002. In 2007 she became world number one, ending Annika Sörenstam's long reign, and she won two major championships and 27 LPGA events. At the peak of her career, in 2010, she retired at twenty-eight to start a family and focus on her foundation, which runs a school for disadvantaged children in Guadalajara, the city where she grew up.”
