📍Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, Avenida Altavista, San Ángel, 01060 Mexico City, Mexico
1934 – 1957“I was born in Guanajuato, a silver-mining town, and as a small child I drew on every wall of our home until my father covered them with canvas and chalkboards for me. I studied in Europe for fourteen years, then came home to paint the story of Mexico on public walls. In 1931 our friend, the young architect and painter Juan O'Gorman, designed two houses for Frida and me on a corner in San Ángel, then a quiet village on the edge of Mexico City. They were among the first functionalist buildings in Latin America, without ornament, built to serve our needs: a big pink-and-white block for me, with a huge studio window, and a smaller blue one for Frida, joined only by a little bridge across the roof. O'Gorman ringed them with a fence of living cactus. We moved in in 1934. We lived apart, together, in these houses — loving, quarrelling, separating, reconciling. I kept my studio here, filled with papier-mâché Judas figures and pre-Hispanic sculpture, for the rest of my life. It is now the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo.”
