1968 – 1985“Celine Dion was born in March 1968 in Charlemagne, a small working-class town on the river just east of Montreal, Quebec, the youngest of fourteen children of Adhémar and Thérèse Dion. The family was poor but full of love and music: her father played the accordion, her mother the violin, and her brothers and sisters played instruments and sang, forming their own family band that performed across Quebec. The house was crowded, noisy and warm, and the baby of the family grew up surrounded by songs. She sang almost before she could talk. At five she gave her first public performance, singing at her brother Michel's wedding, and soon she was singing at the family's piano bar, Le Vieux Baril, to entertain the customers. She dreamed of nothing but singing, and she found school difficult and unimportant compared with music. At twelve, she co-wrote her first song, Ce n'était qu'un rêve, with her mother and her brother Jacques, and Michel sent a demo tape to the music manager René Angélil. Angélil was moved to tears when he heard her sing, and he mortgaged his house to finance her first album, La voix du bon Dieu, released in 1981 when she was thirteen. She became a star in Quebec and France, won the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland in 1988, and went on to become one of the best-selling singers in history with songs like My Heart Will Go On. She has always spoken of her parents and her brothers and sisters as the foundation of her life.”
