1962 – 1979“Jim Carrey was born in Newmarket, Ontario, a small town north of Toronto, in January 1962, the youngest of four children of Percy, a jazz saxophonist turned accountant, and Kathleen, a homemaker. His father was gentle, funny and full of jokes, and the house was loud with laughter; Jim's earliest audience was his mother, who was often unwell, and he did impressions and made faces to cheer her up. At ten he sent his résumé to The Carol Burnett Show. The family later moved to Burlington, on Lake Ontario, where they lived for eight years. Then, when Jim was in his early teens, his father lost his job, and the family's life fell apart. They moved to Scarborough, in Toronto's east, and in return for a house across the street, the whole family worked as security guards and janitors at the Titan Wheels factory; Jim worked eight-hour shifts after school. For a time the family lived in a Volkswagen camper van, and Jim and his brother camped in a tent by Lake Ontario. He has spoken about the anger and depression of those years, and how comedy became his escape. At sixteen he dropped out of Agincourt Collegiate to support the family, and began performing stand-up at Yuk Yuk's comedy club in Toronto, with his father driving him and helping write his act. He moved to Los Angeles in the early 1980s, and In Living Color, Ace Ventura, The Mask and The Truman Show made him a star. The boy who made faces to cheer up his mother had become one of the most famous comedians in the world.”
